That One Piece of Paper

From our discussion of The Futures Cone, Ann Werner offered this:

This is called ‘that one piece of paper’ aka, ‘the flower’ taken from Richard Bolles’ book – What Colour is your parachute and is used with permission.

The idea here is to work with the separate categories (the bite sized chunks) to help you determine just what it is that you wish for in your work, lifestyle, career goals and all the other aspects included. The reason why it is also called ‘that one piece of paper’ is that by the end of the exercise, that piece of paper will pretty much reveal all about you and your life & career needs and what is important to you. See how you go with this. It does not need to be done in one sitting – often thoughts come to you which you may wish to add later.

Something that will help you complete this comprehensively, is to create a timeline – merely an horizontal line across a page – where you place any work that you have loved doing above the line, and that which you dislike(d) below the line. Of course, the focus is more on what is enjoyable. When you are doing this, be conscious of the motive around the work that you enjoyed. Is it real? Or is it working towards pleasing people in some way? Did you really enjoy the actual work, or just the rewards that came from it?
